Department of Petroulem

Petroleum Engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil, or natural gas. Exploration, production, refinement, and distribution to a market are the industries related to this highly technical engineering profession.

Petroleum Engineering requires a good knowledge of many other related disciplines, such as geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation (well logging), drilling, economics, reservoir simulation, well engineering, artificial lift systems, and oil and gas facilities engineering.

Mission & Vision

Vision

Achieving excellence in Engineering education, scientific and applied research, and community serving nationally and internationally.

Mission

The faculty of Engineering and Technology provides a promising academic and cultural environment that enables the graduation of outstanding engineers who are capable of competing nationally and regionally and well acquainted with the job market professionally and ethically. It also motivates conducting innovative scientific research and contributes to community serving and development.

objective

The Petroleum Engineering Program aims at providing future engineers with appropriate theoretical knowledge and technical skills to respond to professional market demands. The program aims at shaping the fresh graduate to be able to:
  • Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering concepts to the solution of petroleum engineering problems.
  • Design a system; surface and subsurface operations to meet the required needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health, safety, and sustainability.
  • Design and conduct experiments as well as analyze and interpret data.
  • Identify, formulate and solve fundamental petroleum engineering problems.
  • Use the techniques, skills, and appropriate engineering software and laboratory tools, necessary for engineering practice and project management.
  • Function on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Consider the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and social context.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary engineering issues.
  • Display professional and ethical responsibilities; and contextual understanding.
  • Engage in self- and life- long learning
  • Find better lower-cost methods used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
  • Lead or supervise a group of designs or technicians and other work force.
  • Have an integrated understanding of the scientific and engineering principles underlying the four major elements of the field of Petroleum Engineering; Exploration, Drilling, Reservoirs, and Production Engineering related to petroleum systems appropriate to the field.
  • Apply and integrate knowledge from each of the four elements of the Petroleum Engineering to solve exploration, drilling, reservoir and production problems.
  • Recognize the importance of conventional and nonconventional energy resources to industry and society.
  • Use the relevant mathematical and computational skills and the available computer software in solving petroleum engineering problems.
  • Apply/Adopt system analysis tools in well design and drilling operations, reservoir engineering, production optimization, well services interpretation, and offshore technology.
  • Use and/or develop computer software, necessary for reservoir simulation, logging interpretation, and production optimization.
  • Analyze and synthesize petroleum engineering systems and understand the associated uncertainty in reserve estimation.
